Vita
With his appointment as Chief Conductor of the Vogtland Philharmonie from the 2025/26 season, Florian Ludwig opened a new chapter in his long-standing career as an opera and concert conductor. Alongside his regular work with the orchestra, he continues to appear as a guest with leading orchestras and opera companies in Germany and abroad.
Recent engagements include concerts with the Oldenburg State Orchestra, MDR Symphony Orchestra, Philharmonisches Orchester Gießen, Württembergische Philharmonie, Philharmonie Südwestfalen, Nordwestdeutsche Philharmonie and the Bremen Philharmonic. At Musiktheater im Revier in Gelsenkirchen, he also conducted a semi-staged production of Offenbach’s DIE HERZOGIN VON GEROLSTEIN.
Further recent projects include DER FREISCHÜTZ at the Oldenburgisches Staatstheater, Mozart’s IL RE PASTORE with the Kammerakademie Potsdam, Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony with the Vogtland Philharmonie, Verdi’s MESSA DA REQUIEM and both Brahms piano concertos with the Nordwestdeutsche Philharmonie, as well as gala and symphonic concerts with the Staatskapelle Halle, Bergische Symphoniker, Dortmunder Philharmoniker, Württembergische Philharmonie Reutlingen and Brandenburger Symphoniker.
Earlier stages of his career took Florian Ludwig to the Nationaltheater Mannheim and Theater Bremen, where he served as First Kapellmeister from 2003. From 2008 to 2017, he was General Music Director in Hagen, where he played a defining role in the artistic development of the Philharmonic Orchestra. In the 2014/15 season, the German Music Publishers Association honoured his innovative programming with its award for the best concert programme of the year in the German-speaking world.
From 2020 to 2022, Florian Ludwig served as interim General Music Director in Gießen. Among the artistic highlights of his tenure was a concert performance of Wagner’s TRISTAN UND ISOLDE during the pandemic.
Guest conducting engagements have taken him to orchestras including the Tonhalle Orchestra Zurich, MDR Symphony Orchestra Leipzig, Munich Symphony Orchestra, Staatskapelle Halle, Kammerakademie Potsdam, Nordwestdeutsche Philharmonie, Philharmonie Südwestfalen, Oldenburg State Orchestra and Brandenburger Symphoniker, as well as to Musiktheater im Revier, the Kuopio Symphony Orchestra in Finland and the Kaunas Symphony Orchestra in Lithuania. Since 2019, he has also enjoyed an ongoing artistic collaboration with Kammeroper Rheinsberg.
Alongside his conducting career, Florian Ludwig is Professor of Orchestral Conducting at the Hochschule für Musik Detmold. His artistic work combines a broad symphonic and operatic repertoire with a strong commitment to music education and audience engagement. He sums up his artistic outlook in the following words:
“Music can transcend borders and make language barriers disappear. Music creates a sense of common ground where there was once only division. That is why its role in society is more important today than ever.”
