Conductor Florian Ludwig has been a Professor of Orchestral Conducting at the Hochschule für Musik in Detmold since 2015. He followed a traditional Kapellmeister career path, leading him to various German city theaters. After positions at the Nationaltheater Mannheim and Theater Bremen—where he initially served as Second Kapellmeister and from 2003 as First Kapellmeister, significantly contributing to the success of the house under the direction of Klaus Pierwoß—he succeeded in dramatically increasing the regional and national popularity and reputation of the Hagen Philharmonic Orchestra as General Music Director from 2008 to 2017. His programming and the artistic, cross-genre development of the Philharmonic Orchestra were recognized in the 2014/15 season by the German Music Publishers Association, which awarded him the prize for the best annual program of all orchestras in the German-speaking world. The award particularly praised the exceptional range of the repertoire, covering all epochs of classical orchestral music and including crossover projects with jazz, rock, and pop bands, as well as innovative concert formats that incorporated cabaret artists like Jochen Malmsheimer and Bernd Gieseking.
From 2020 to 2022, Florian Ludwig served as interim General Music Director of the Gießen Philharmonic Orchestra and the Stadttheater Gießen, where he made a significant artistic impact during the pandemic with a concert performance of Tristan und Isolde.
Florian Ludwig has conducted his own productions at the Wuppertal Bühnen, the Volksoper Vienna, and the Staatstheater Braunschweig, and is a welcome guest conductor with the Bremer Philharmoniker, the Munich Symphony Orchestra, and the MDR Symphony Orchestra Leipzig. Additionally, he has conducted the Tonhalle-Orchester Zürich, the Kuopio Symphony Orchestra in Finland, and the Kaunas Symphony Orchestra in Lithuania, among others. Since 2019, he has maintained a continuous collaboration with the Chamber Opera in Rheinsberg.
Ludwig’s repertoire is characterized by its wide variety and openness to new and unfamiliar works. He is particularly passionate about developing engaging, audience-oriented musical concepts. “Music can overcome boundaries, erase language barriers, and create unity where there was once division. This is why music is more socially important today than ever before.”
