Vita
The Norwegian contralto Julie-Marie Sundal studied voice and acting at Tonneheim Folkehøgskole and Stavanger University (Norway) and at the University of Massachusetts (USA).
In 2009, Julie-Marie Sundal became a member of the International Opera Elite Studio at Theater Lübeck, where she performed the roles of Erda, Flosshilde, and Schwertleite under the musical direction of Roman Brogli-Sacher in the critically acclaimed production of Der Ring des Nibelungen (directed by Anthony Pilavachi).
In the following season, Julie-Marie Sundal became a permanent ensemble member of the Niedersächsische Staatstheater Hannover. From 2010 to 2019, she performed over fifty roles on the Staatsoper stage, including Ottone in L’INCORONAZIONE DI POPPEA, Baroness von Günwiesel in DER JUNGE LORD, Zita in GIANNI SCHICCHI, Quickly in FALSTAFF, Mary in DER FLIEGENDE HOLLÄNDER, 1st Norn, Flosshilde, Schwertleite, Erda in DER RING DES NIBELUNGEN, Ulrica in EIN MASKENBALL, Orlofsky in DIE FLEDERMAUS, Olga in EUGEN ONEGIN, Sonjetka in LADY MACBETH VON MZENSK, and Hypolita in A MIDSUMMER NIGHT’S DREAM.
Julie-Marie Sundal continues to appear as a guest artist at the Aalto Theater Essen, Hamburg State Opera, Staatstheater Nürnberg, Staatsoper Hannover, as well as the theaters in Bremen, Lübeck, and Koblenz, with the Brandenburgisches Staatsorchester Frankfurt, and at Daegu Opera House in South Korea.
Thanks to her darkly timbred voice with exceptional range, Julie-Marie Sundal is a sought-after soloist in the concert and oratorio repertoire. She has performed oratorios by Bach, Handel and Schumann (Ruth), Brahms (Alto Rhapsody), Mahler (Symphonies No. 2 and 3), Stravinsky (Les Noces), Mozart (Requiem), and Oedipus Rex. A highlight was a benefit concert of Beethoven’s Symphony No. 9 in Hong Kong organized by Medart.
Julie-Marie Sundal has worked with directors such as Sebastian Baumgarten, Michiel Dijkema, Dietrich Hilsdorf, Frank Hilbrich, Barry Kosky, Balász Kovalik, Bernd Mottl, Benedikt von Peter, Anthony Pilavachi, Floris Visser; and with musical directors Howard Arman, Wolfgang Bozic, Karen Kamensek, Roman Brogli-Sacher, Benjamin Reiners, Ivan Repusic, Mark Rohde, and Stefan Soltesz.
