Timothy Oliver has been described as having a voice that is “glowing,” “ringing,” and “captivating in its beauty and evenness.”
In the 2025/26 season, he appears at the Semperoper Dresden as Monostatos in Die Zauberflöte and Spoletta in Tosca, and returns to the Komische Oper Berlin in The Nose.
In the 2024/25 season, he was heard at the Semperoper Dresden as Monostatos in Die Zauberflöte, the Second Jew in Salome, and in the concert premiere of Leonard Bernstein’s Candide, performing the roles of the Alchemist, Sultan Achmet, and the Crook. The season began with two significant house debuts: as Prince Arjuna in Philip Glass’ Satyagraha at Staatsoper Hannover, followed shortly thereafter by Brighella in Andreas Homoki’s new production of Ariadne auf Naxos at Opernhaus Zürich. Other highlights included his debut at Teatro Carlo Felice in Genoa as Mercury in Strauss’ Die Liebe der Danae under Fabio Luisi, Max in Der Freischütz at Staatstheater Cottbus, and a last-minute appearance as A Young Servant in Strauss’ Elektra at Staatsoper Berlin.
In the previous season, Timothy made a highly acclaimed debut as Max in Der Freischütz at the Hessisches Staatstheater Wiesbaden. He has appeared in numerous productions at the Komische Oper Berlin, where he made his debut in 2015 in HK Gruber’s Tales from the Vienna Woods, followed by roles in Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg, Satyagraha, Candide, Falstaff, and the title role of Váňa Kudrjaš in a new production of Kát’a Kabanová. He performs regularly as Monostatos in Die Zauberflöte at the Komische Oper and has toured with this production to Japan and to New York’s Lincoln Center as part of the Mostly Mozart Festival.
Following his debut as Gandhi in Satyagraha at the Oldenburgisches Staatstheater in 2016, Timothy went on to sing Loge (Das Rheingold) and Mime (Siegfried) in a new Ring cycle. In 2008, he made his Bayreuth Festival debut as the Fourth Squire in Parsifal, returning the following season in the same role while also singing Ulrich Eislinger in Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg. In 2018, he made his Salzburg Easter Festival debut as Habinnas in Maderna’s Satiricon, followed in 2019 by his debut at the Maggio Musicale in Florence under Fabio Luisi as the Steersman in Der fliegende Holländer.
On the concert stage, Timothy made his debut in 2008 at the Alte Oper Frankfurt as the Dying Swan in Carmina Burana. He enjoys a close artistic collaboration with Fabio Luisi, who first invited him in 2010 to the Musikverein in Vienna for the title role in Berlioz’s La Damnation de Faust, and has since engaged him for performances with the London Symphony Orchestra, the Vienna Philharmonic, NHK Symphony, and the Accademia di Santa Cecilia in Rome. Timothy is also a sought-after interpreter of numerous works by Johann Sebastian Bach, particularly the Christmas Oratorio and the St. John and St. Matthew Passions.
A native of Norfolk, Virginia, Timothy earned his Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees from the University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music in 2001 and 2003, graduating magna cum laude. During his studies, he spent several summers with the Ohio Light Opera and took part in programs such as the St. Louis Opera Apprentice Program and the Central City Opera, where he received the John Moriarty Award.
