Romanian tenor Teodor Ilincăi has performed at some of the world’s most prestigious opera houses, including Opera Australia, San Diego Opera, New National Theatre Tokyo, Bolshoi Theatre in Moscow, Royal Opera House Covent Garden London, Opéra national de Paris, Opéra de Marseille, Théâtre du Capitole Toulouse, Wiener Staatsoper, Teatro Real, Gran Teatre del Liceu, Teatro Arriaga de Bilbao, Teatro de la Maestranza, La Monnaie/De Munt, Deutsche Oper Berlin, Staatsoper Unter den Linden, Semperoper Dresden, Oper Frankfurt, Hamburgische Staatsoper, and Bayerische Staatsoper Munich.
Recent highlights include Cavaradossi (TOSCA) at the New National Theatre in Tokyo, Otello (OTELLO) at the opera in Tbilisi, Calaf (TURANDOT) at Opernhaus Zürich, Deutsche Oper am Rhein in Düsseldorf, Puccini Festival in Torre del Lago, as well as in a new production at Grand Théâtre de Genève; Maurizio in ADRIANA LECOUVREUR at the Riga Opera Festival and Opera Nationala Romana din Timisoara; a gala concert with Kristīne Opolais at the Palace of Arts (Müpa) in Budapest; his debuts as Otello (OTELLO), Canio (I PAGLIACCI), and Radames (AIDA) at the National Theatre in Bucharest and Opera Nationala Romana din Timisoara; Cavaradossi (TOSCA) and Pinkerton (MADAMA BUTTERFLY) at Semperoper Dresden and Staatsoper Berlin, as well as in Paris, London, Vienna, San Diego, and Opera Municipal de Marseille; Calaf (TURANDOT) in Tokyo, Don José (CARMEN) at Hamburgische Staatsoper, and Turiddu (CAVALLERIA RUSTICANA) in Barcelona, Brussels, and Hamburg.
His repertoire also includes roles such as Don Carlo (DON CARLO), Alfredo (LA TRAVIATA), Macduff (MACBETH), Fritz (L’AMICO FRITZ), Pollione (NORMA), Maurizio (ADRIANA LECOUVREUR), Romeo (ROMÉO ET JULIETTE), Faust (MARGARETHE), and Lenski (EUGEN ONEGIN).
After studying music with a focus on the oboe, Teodor Ilincăi pursued studies in Byzantine music and music education at the Conservatory in Bucharest before beginning his professional career at the Romanian National Opera in Bucharest. At just 25 years old, he performed Macduff in Giuseppe Verdi’s MACBETH there. In the same year, he also sang Macduff at the Hamburgische Staatsoper, debuted as Ismaele in Verdi’s NABUCCO at Wiener Staatsoper, and as Rodolfo in Puccini’s LA BOHÈME at the Royal Opera House Covent Garden.
Teodor Ilincăi is a prize winner of the International Singing Competition Francisco Viñas in Barcelona, the Great Tenors Tournament in Szczecin (Poland), and the Ludovic Spiess Prize of the Romanian Music Forum.
