Samantha Gaul

Vita

Soprano Samantha Gaul has been a member of the ensemble at the Oper Leipzig since the 2022/23 season, where she has performed roles such as Sophie in STRAUSS’ DER ROSENKAVALIER, Gretel in Humperdinck’s HÄNSEL UND GRETEL, Ännchen in WEBER’s DER FREISCHÜTZ, Musetta in LA BOHÈME, Frasquita in CARMEN, Zerlina in a new production of DON GIOVANNI, Pamina in a new production of DIE ZAUBERFLÖTE, Despina (COSÌ FAN TUTTE), and Waldvogel (SIEGFRIED).

Additionally, Samantha Gaul will make her debut with the Thomanerchor Leipzig and the Gewandhausorchester under the baton of Andreas Reize, performing the soprano role in HAYDN’s DIE SCHÖPFUNG, and will appear for the first time at the Berliner Philharmonie, the Kulturpalast Dresden, and the Thomaskirche Leipzig.

Guest engagements have taken her to the Komische Oper Berlin (Nannetta in GIANNI SCHICCI), Theater Basel (Augusta Leigh in DIODATI.UNENDLICH), Staatstheater Darmstadt (Flora in THE TURN OF THE SCREW and Linfea in LA CALISTO), Bühnen Bern (Musetta in LA BOHÈME), Oper Frankfurt, Opéra National de Montpellier, and Deutsches Nationaltheater Weimar (Najade in ARIADNE AUF NAXOS), as well as multiple appearances at Staatstheater Augsburg (Sophie Scholl in DIE WEIßE ROSE, Serpetta in LA FINTA GIARDINIERA, Adina in L’ELISIR D’AMORE, and Simplicius Simplicissimus). She also made her debuts at the Munich Biennale for Contemporary Music Theater, Schwetzinger SWR Festspiele, Rheingau Music Festival, Weilburg Castle Concerts, and performed a lieder recital at Villa Wahnfried in Bayreuth.

As a passionate concert and lieder singer, Samantha Gaul was delighted to make her debut at the Schubertiade Hohenems in the spring of 2022, accompanied by pianist Kit Armstrong, performing songs set to poems by Ulla Hans, which they premiered together.

With the Budapest Festival Orchestra under Iván Fischer, she was heard as Najade in ARIADNE AUF NAXOS at the Béla Bartók National Concert Hall in Budapest and at the Teatro Olimpico in Vicenza. The highly acclaimed soprano also made her debut at the Philharmonie Luxembourg, performing Mahler’s 4th Symphony under Carlo Rizzari.

At the Theater Freiburg, where she was a member of the ensemble until 2022, she performed significant roles in her repertoire, including Susanna (LE NOZZE DI FIGARO), Nannetta (FALSTAFF), Adele (DIE FLEDERMAUS), Zerlina (DON GIOVANNI), Musetta (LA BOHÈME), Olympia (HOFFMANN’S TALES), and the title role in the German premiere of Mark Anthony Turnage’s CORALINE.

She also celebrated significant success in the title role of JANÁČEK’s THE CUNNING LITTLE VIXEN – a role she recorded for a CD production with NAXOS and SWR.

In 2018, Samantha Gaul was nominated as Nachwuchskünstlerin des Jahres (Young Artist of the Year) by Opernwelt.
