Vita

In the 2025/26 season, soprano Samantha Gaul can be heard at Oper Leipzig as Despina in a new production of Così fan tutte, Nannetta in a new production of Falstaff, Pamina (Die Zauberflöte), Musetta (La Bohème), Gretel (Hänsel und Gretel), Woglinde (Götterdämmerung), L’Inconnue in the world premiere of Coming Up for Air, and Frasquita (Carmen). In concert, she will appear in the New Year’s Gala with the Orchestra Sinfonica Siciliana in Palermo and perform Massenet’s La Vierge with the Staatskapelle Halle.

In the recent past (2024/25), her performances at Oper Leipzig included Oriane in a new production of Amadis de Gaule, Pamina (Die Zauberflöte), Waldvogel (Siegfried), Annina (La Traviata), Ännchen (Der Freischütz), Madama Cortese (Il viaggio a Reims), Zerlina (Don Giovanni), and Sophie (Der Rosenkavalier). Guest engagements in the same season took her to the Müpa Budapest and Teatro Olimpico in Vicenza as Najade (Ariadne auf Naxos), to the National Centre for the Performing Arts (NCPA) in Beijing as Adele (Die Fledermaus), and to the Komische Oper Berlin as Gretel (Hänsel und Gretel).

Since joining the ensemble of Oper Leipzig in 2022/23, she has performed an extensive repertoire including Sophie (Der Rosenkavalier), Gretel (Hänsel und Gretel), Ännchen (Der Freischütz), Musetta (La Bohème), Frasquita (Carmen), Zerlina (Don Giovanni), Pamina (Die Zauberflöte), Despina (Così fan tutte), and Waldvogel (Siegfried).

Her further guest appearances have included the Komische Oper Berlin (Nannetta / Falstaff, Gretel / Hänsel und Gretel), Theater Basel (Augusta Leigh / Diodati. Unendlich), Staatstheater Darmstadt (Flora / The Turn of the Screw, Linfea / La Calisto), Bühnen Bern (Musetta / La Bohème), Oper Frankfurt, Opéra National de Montpellier, Deutsches Nationaltheater Weimar (Najade / Ariadne auf Naxos), and frequent returns to Staatstheater Augsburg (including Sophie Scholl / Die weiße Rose, Serpetta / La finta giardiniera, Adina / L’elisir d’amore, and the title role in Simplicius Simplicissimus).

On the concert stage, she has appeared at the Schwetzinger SWR Festival, Rheingau Musik Festival, Weilburg Palace Concerts, and the Schubertiade in Hohenems—where she premiered Kit Armstrong’s Ulla Hahn Lieder—as well as in recital at the Villa Wahnfried in Bayreuth. She has performed with the Budapest Festival Orchestra under Iván Fischer as Najade (Ariadne auf Naxos) at the Béla Bartók National Concert Hall in Budapest and Teatro Olimpico in Vicenza, and made her debut at the Philharmonie Luxembourg with Mahler’s Symphony No. 4 under Carlo Rizzari.

From 2013 to 2022, Samantha Gaul was a member of the ensemble at Theater Freiburg, where she performed major roles in her repertoire including Susanna (Le nozze di Figaro), Nannetta (Falstaff), Adele (Die Fledermaus), Zerlina (Don Giovanni), Musetta (La Bohème), Olympia (Les Contes d’Hoffmann), and the title roles in Mark-Anthony Turnage’s Coraline (German premiere) and Janáček’s The Cunning Little Vixen—the latter also recorded for NAXOS with the SWR.

In 2018 she was nominated by Opernwelt magazine as Young Artist of the Year. Samantha Gaul studied voice at the Hochschule für Musik und Theater München and the Hochschule für Musik Freiburg.
