Tenor Matthias Wohlbrecht studied voice at the University of Music Würzburg and completed his training at the Accademia del Belcanto in Milan. After engagements at the Volkstheater Rostock, the Staatstheater Darmstadt, and the Nationaltheater Mannheim, he has been a member of the ensemble at the Badisches Staatstheater Karlsruhe since 2004.

Matthias Wohlbrecht is frequently invited for international guest performances, where he has portrayed roles such as Pong (TURANDOT) at Teatro La Fenice, Loge and Mime (SIEGFRIED) at Teatro Petruzzelli in Bari, and Herodes at Teatro Lirico G. Verdi in Trieste. His portrayal of Loge in Auckland, New Zealand, and Mime (DAS RHEINGOLD) in Seoul further solidified his reputation. Domestically, he is consistently cast in his signature roles, including Loge and Mime in the new RING cycle at the Staatstheater Karlsruhe, where he also gained significant acclaim as Houston Stewart Chamberlain in the world premiere of WAHNFRIED, earning a nomination as Singer of the Year in Opernwelt magazine. Other notable engagements include his debuts as Max (DER FREISCHÜTZ) and Aegisth (ELEKTRA), as well as his performances as Loge and Mime in the highly praised RING production at the Staatstheater Oldenburg. Upcoming engagements will see him performing Mime in SIEGFRIED and Loge in DAS RHEINGOLD at the Theater Dortmund, where he will appear in both roles throughout the complete RING cycle in the 2024/25 season.

In January 2024, Matthias Wohlbrecht made his debut at the Oper Frankfurt as Herodes in Strauss’ SALOME.

In the concert arena, Wohlbrecht is also a sought-after guest. He has performed several times at the Philharmonie im Gasteig in Munich, where he sang Mime and Loge in DER RING IN ONE EVENING. Other concert engagements include performing as Aufrührer in Schönberg’s JACOBSLEITER with the Deutsches Symphonie-Orchester Berlin at the Berlin Philharmonie under the baton of Ingo Metzmacher, and as Albert in Korngold’s DIE TOTE STADT with the Orchestre de Radio France in Paris. Additionally, he has appeared at the Tchaikovsky Concert Hall in Moscow in a concert performance of HÄNSEL UND GRETEL.
