In the 2026/27 season, Matthias Wohlbrecht adds another distinctive character role to his repertoire as the Captain in Alban Berg’s WOZZECK at La Monnaie in Brussels. The new production is directed by Christophe Coppens and conducted by Alain Altinoglu.

Recent engagements include Herod in a new production of SALOME at Komische Oper Berlin, as well as Loge in DAS RHEINGOLD and Mime in SIEGFRIED in the complete RING cycle at Theater Dortmund. He has also appeared as Herod in new productions at Oper Wuppertal and Oper Frankfurt and stepped in for the role at short notice at the Latvian National Opera in Riga and at Theater Bremen.

Matthias Wohlbrecht has been a member of the ensemble at the Badisches Staatstheater Karlsruhe since 2004, where he has established himself in a wide range of strongly characterised roles including Loge, Mime, Herod and the Witch in HÄNSEL UND GRETEL. He also attracted considerable attention as Houston Stewart Chamberlain in the world premiere of Avner Dorman’s WAHNFRIED and was nominated by Opernwelt magazine for “Singer of the Year”.

International guest engagements have taken him to Teatro La Fenice in Venice as Pong in TURANDOT, Teatro Petruzzelli in Bari as Loge and Mime in SIEGFRIED, and Teatro Lirico Giuseppe Verdi in Trieste as Herod. Further appearances include Loge in Auckland, Mime in DAS RHEINGOLD in Seoul, Max in DER FREISCHÜTZ and Aegisth in ELEKTRA at the Oldenburgisches Staatstheater, as well as Brighella in ARIADNE AUF NAXOS and the First Armed Man in DIE ZAUBERFLÖTE at Staatsoper Unter den Linden.

Wohlbrecht is also a regular presence on the concert stage. He has performed Mime and Loge on several occasions in DER RING AN EINEM ABEND at the Philharmonie im Gasteig in Munich. Under Ingo Metzmacher, he appeared as an Insurgent in Schoenberg’s DIE JAKOBSLEITER with the Deutsches Symphonie-Orchester Berlin at the Berlin Philharmonie. Further concert engagements include Albert in Korngold’s DIE TOTE STADT with the Orchestre de Radio France in Paris and a concert performance of HÄNSEL UND GRETEL at the Tchaikovsky Concert Hall in Moscow.

Matthias Wohlbrecht studied at the Hochschule für Musik Würzburg and at the Accademia del Belcanto in Milan.
