German tenor Martin Homrich is one of the most versatile interpreters of the German-language operatic repertoire. Following a successful international career as a lyric tenor, in recent years he has consistently moved towards the heldentenor and character tenor repertoire. His artistic profile combines the stylistic elegance and vocal line of the classical repertoire with the expressive power and dramatic intensity of the major dramatic roles.

Martin Homrich studied at the Cologne University of Music and Dance with Kurt Moll. Further important artistic impulses came from masterclasses with Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau and Montserrat Caballé.

He began his stage career as a member of the ensemble at the Hamburg State Opera before joining the Saxon State Opera Dresden (Semperoper). Since 2017, he has been a permanent ensemble member at Musiktheater im Revier Gelsenkirchen.

Guest engagements have taken him to major opera houses throughout Europe, including the Bavarian State Opera, Staatsoper Unter den Linden Berlin, Deutsche Oper Berlin, Vienna State Opera, Teatro alla Scala in Milan, Opéra National de Paris and Teatro dell’Opera di Roma.

As a lyric tenor, Martin Homrich was particularly associated with the major roles of the Mozart and Strauss repertoire. His principal roles included Tamino, Idomeneo, Tito, Belmonte, Don Ottavio and Ferrando, as well as Matteo (ARABELLA), Flamand (CAPRICCIO), the Italian Singer (DER ROSENKAVALIER) and Narraboth (SALOME). He also sang Werther as well as Walther von der Vogelweide in Wagner’s TANNHÄUSER at Teatro alla Scala under the musical direction of Zubin Mehta. This repertoire formed the foundation for his subsequent development towards more dramatic roles.

His repertoire today includes the title role in LOHENGRIN, Erik (DER FLIEGENDE HOLLÄNDER), Florestan (FIDELIO), Max (DER FREISCHÜTZ), Hans (THE BARTERED BRIDE), Captain Vere (BILLY BUDD) and the Emperor in DIE FRAU OHNE SCHATTEN.

His interpretations are distinguished by a combination of lyrical vocal refinement, linguistic precision and intense psychological characterisation. Alongside the major roles of the more dramatic repertoire, Martin Homrich has a particular affinity for distinctive and multifaceted stage characters. His recent successes as Herod in SALOME, the Witch in Humperdinck’s HANSEL UND GRETEL and Celia Peachum in Kurt Weill’s DIE DREIGROSCHENOPER have received an enthusiastic response from audiences and critics alike, underlining his exceptional versatility as a singing actor.

Highlights of his career to date include appearances at the Bayreuth Festival, the Schwetzingen SWR Festival, the Schleswig-Holstein Music Festival, the Richard Strauss Festival in Garmisch-Partenkirchen and the Ludwigsburg Festival.

Martin Homrich has worked with conductors including Daniel Barenboim, Zubin Mehta, Marek Janowski, Sir Donald Runnicles, Armin Jordan, Ulf Schirmer, Peter Schreier, Stefan Soltesz and Simone Young, as well as directors including Harry Kupfer, Achim Freyer, Hugo de Ana and Dietrich Hilsdorf.

His discography includes Peggy Glanville-Hicks’ opera Sappho in the role of Phaon, works by Othmar Schoeck with the MDR Radio Choir and MDR Symphony Orchestra, Wagner’s Das Rheingold in a live recording from Amsterdam as Froh, Strauss’ Intermezzo as Baron Lummer with the Bavarian Radio Orchestra, and the DVD recording of Aribert Reimann’s Lear from the Hamburg State Opera, in which he appears as Edmund. Current projects reflect his continuing artistic development. His forthcoming debuts include the Drum Major in Alban Berg’s WOZZECK in a production by Ilaria Lanzino and the role of Petrosilius Zwackelmann in Sebastian Schwab’s opera RÄUBER HOTZENPLOTZ, which received its world premiere in 2023.
