Dominic Limburg

Vita

Swiss conductor Dominic Limburg served as Kapellmeister at the Deutsche Oper Berlin from 2021 to 2024, where he led performances of La Traviata, Rigoletto, Verdi’s Requiem, La Bohème, La Gioconda, Die Zauberflöte, Hänsel und Gretel (including a guest performance at the Royal Opera House Muscat), Carmen, Les Vêpres Siciliennes, Der fliegende Holländer, and Fidelio. He made his guest debut at the Staatsoper Hannover with Hänsel und Gretel, conducted the (new) productions of the ballet evenings Per aspera ad astra and Maria Stuart, directed performances of Wozzeck at the Badisches Staatstheater Karlsruhe, and led the new production of Alcina at the Wuppertal Bühnen.

His current and upcoming engagements include the new production of Eugene Onegin at Northern Ireland Opera, the new production of La Bohème at Theater Chemnitz, Il viaggio a Reims at the Zurich Opera House, and La Traviata and I vespri Siciliani at the Deutsche Oper Berlin.

As an assistant to Sir Donald Runnicles, Dominic Limburg has been deeply involved in the Deutsche Oper Berlin’s great Wagner tradition. He closely oversaw premieres such as Götterdämmerung (directed by Stefan Herheim), Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg (directed by Jossi Wieler), and Fidelio (directed by David Herrmann), as well as the revivals of Lohengrin and Tristan und Isolde. He also assisted numerous guest conductors with premieres and revivals of key repertoire works. At the Deutsche Oper Berlin, Dominic Limburg collaborated with renowned singers such as Michael Volle, Nina Stemme, Klaus Florian Vogt, and Joseph Calleja, as well as many other outstanding international artists.

From 2016 to 2021, he was initially Second Kapellmeister, and from 2020, First Kapellmeister at the Badisches Staatstheater Karlsruhe. During this time, Dominic Limburg conducted a wide repertoire spanning from Baroque to contemporary works across all genres, including new productions of Swan Lake, A Midsummer Night’s Dream, Die lustigen Nibelungen, as well as performances of The Tales of Hoffmann, Anna Bolena, The Cunning Little Vixen, La Clemenza di Tito, the commissioned work Wahnfried by A. Dorman, and many other operas, ballets, and youth concerts. Unfortunately, due to the pandemic, new productions of The Merry Widow and Il barbiere di Siviglia, a guest performance of Don Giovanni in Korea, as well as scheduled performances of Wozzeck and Aida, were canceled.

From 2015 to 2021, Dominic Limburg was a scholarship recipient in the “Forum Dirigieren” of the German Music Council, where he was listed among the “Maestros of Tomorrow.” Guest conducting engagements took him to the Beethoven Orchestra Bonn, the Neubrandenburg Philharmonic, the Kurpfälzisches Kammerorchester Mannheim, the Graubünden Chamber Philharmonic, and the Meiningen State Theater.

Limburg regularly collaborates with youth orchestras and conducted the Swiss Youth Symphony Orchestra’s national autumn tour in 2021, featuring Shostakovich’s 10th Symphony, with performances at venues such as the Tonhalle Zurich, Victoria Hall in Geneva, and Stadtcasinos in Basel and Bern. He has served as an assistant and guest conductor for the Junge Philharmonische Orchester Niedersachsen, worked with the LJO Schleswig-Holstein, assisted the Junge Deutsche Philharmonie, and was a guest of the OER in São Paulo. Since 2019, Dominic Limburg has also been Chief Conductor of the Zurich Chamber Philharmonic, where he is committed to promoting young orchestral musicians and discovering promising soloists.

Born in Zurich, with Spanish roots, he attended a bilingual school and is fluent in German, English, Spanish, and French. After formative years with the Zurich Boys’ Choir, Limburg initially studied piano and voice at the Zurich University of the Arts (ZhdK) before earning his Master’s degree with distinction in the renowned conducting class of Prof. Schlaefli. Masterclasses with B. Haitink, E.-P. Salonen, D. Zinman, and his long-standing collaboration as an assistant to Justin Brown in Karlsruhe provided him with significant artistic influence.
