In the 2025/26 season, tenor Matthias Wohlbrecht appears as Herod in a new production of Salome at the Komische Oper Berlin. In the previous season (2024/25), he performed at the Theater Dortmund in the complete Ring cycle as Loge (Das Rheingold) and Mime (Siegfried) – roles in which he had already achieved great success there in 2023/24. Further engagements that season included Herod in a new production of Salome at the Oper Wuppertal, as well as short-notice performances in the same role at the Latvian National Opera in Riga and at Theater Bremen.

Since 2004, Matthias Wohlbrecht has been a member of the ensemble at the Badisches Staatstheater Karlsruhe, where he has established himself in particular as an interpreter of character roles such as Loge and Mime, Herod, and the Witch (Hänsel und Gretel) in the theatre’s new Ring cycle. He also earned great acclaim there as Houston Stewart Chamberlain in the world premiere of Wahnfried, for which he was nominated as “Singer of the Year” by Opernwelt magazine. Other important engagements include his debuts as Max (Der Freischütz) and Aegisth (Elektra), as well as appearances as Loge and Mime in the highly praised Ring production at the Staatstheater Oldenburg.

Internationally, Wohlbrecht has been invited to perform at leading opera houses, including appearances as Pong (Turandot) at Teatro La Fenice in Venice, Loge and Mime (Siegfried) at Teatro Petruzzelli in Bari, and Herod (Salome) at Teatro Lirico G. Verdi in Trieste. His portrayals of Loge in Auckland, New Zealand, and Mime (Das Rheingold) in Seoul have further strengthened his reputation.

In January 2024, he made his debut at Oper Frankfurt as Herod in Salome. His repertoire at the Staatsoper Unter den Linden in Berlin includes Brighella (Ariadne auf Naxos) and the First Armoured Man (Die Zauberflöte).

Wohlbrecht is also a sought-after concert artist. He has appeared several times at the Philharmonie im Gasteig in Munich, performing Mime and Loge in Der Ring an einem Abend. Under Ingo Metzmacher, he sang the Rebel in Schoenberg’s Die Jakobsleiter with the Deutsches Symphonie-Orchester Berlin at the Berliner Philharmonie, and under John Nelson he appeared as Albert in Korngold’s Die tote Stadt with the Orchestre de Radio France in Paris. He has also sung in the Tchaikovsky Concert Hall in Moscow in a concert performance of Hänsel und Gretel.

Matthias Wohlbrecht studied voice at the Hochschule für Musik in Würzburg and completed his training at the Accademia del Belcanto in Milan.
