Er hat das Orchester der Deutschen Oper in einen verbl\u00fcffend\u00a0 temperamentvollen Klangk\u00f6rper verwandelt (ach, h\u00e4tte doch der Prophet an der Deutschen Oper auch diesen Schmiss gehabt!). Das waren zuweilen erfreulich fesche, fast Offenbach\u2018sche Tempi.<\/em>\u00a0<em>In den lyrischen Momenten erahnte man schon die seidige, impressionistische Welt eines Massenet. Woodwinds were especially strong with feather light flutes in the opening to Act Two, cheekily chirpy in the \u201cM\u00ealons! Coupons!\u201d trio. \u00a0The Entr\u2019acte to Act Three was memorable for its plaintive lyricism. Bassoons chuckled along and clarinets were far from inferior. Strings were alternatively dulcet or biting as required with some particularly crisp marcato playing during the fight between Don Jos\u00e9 and Escamillo and in the syncopated rhythms which follow. Bugle-calling trumpets were immaculate and percussion suitably snappy although the maracas in the Habanera were so loud it was as if Carmen had amplified clackers in her bolso. Every now and then it got a bit too loud, but this production can take it.
