He remained completely in character throughout the evening, and his expressive physical manner provided a pleasing complement to his vocal presence. In the second act he grasped at the music stand in apparent stupor in the scene where Barak is drugged by the nurse, eventually collapsing onto a chair in pretend sleep, yet his groggy reawakening moments later gained its force through vocal nuance alone. Die bestens memorierte Partie ging ihm wie Balsam \u00fcber die Lippen. F\u00fcr die Baritonpartien von Strauss scheint er geboren zu sein.\u00a0 Das angenehm sanfte Timbre, das fast schon zu sch\u00f6n ist f\u00fcr den Barak, l\u00e4sst auch einen bedeutenden Liedinterpreten ahnen. Er sollte sich st\u00e4rker diesem Repertoire zuwenden. Mayer<\/strong> singt einen h\u00f6renswerten Barak, ernst, hervorragend phrasiert, mit wolligem Timbre und fester Stimme. Interessant, wie Mayer das bieder Pfundige des Barak, diesen Musters an Langmut und Gattinnenliebe, durch Konzentration auf die Noten klug vermeidet. Mayer die baritonalen H\u00f6hen dieser Rolle und bleibt dabei stets gef\u00fchlvoll und einf\u00fchlsam \u2013 die ber\u00fchmte Szene \u201eAus einem jungen Mund gehen harte Worte\u201c offenbart sich bei Mayer im Ersten Akt als h\u00f6chst feierlich, w\u00fcrdevoll und zu Herzen gehend. Die baritonalen Ausbr\u00fcche pr\u00e4sentieren sich stets kontrolliert und nie unnat\u00fcrlich gro\u00dfdimensioniert. Die sonst f\u00fcr Barak typische Grobschl\u00e4chtigkeit und Bodenst\u00e4ndigkeit r\u00fcckt bei Thomas J. Mayer eher in den Hintergrund und wird durch Noblesse ersetzt, wodurch die rollenimmanente Menschlichkeit aber trotzdem erhalten bleibt. In Summe besticht er klar durch seine B\u00fchnenpr\u00e4senz, die Ehrfurcht und Professionalit\u00e4t ausstrahlt. Zudem ist Mayer eine hervorragende Textdeutlichkeit zu attestieren, die selbst im hohen Register klar zu vernehmen ist.
