The final act, more orchestral than operatic, is musically the richest. Reiners ably emphasized the score\u2019s lush sonorities and intoxicating textures. To some extent, the orchestra\u2019s dominance in this final act may explain why <em>Maskarade<\/em> never succeeded as an opera (outside of Denmark). Die Vorspiele zu den Akten, die musikalischen Perlen des ber\u00fchmten Hahnentanzes oder der Ballettpantomime und die hochinteressant instrumentierte Untermalung der singenden Charaktere werden fulminant, aber nie zu dick aufgetragen gespielt und verharren in einer transparenten, beschwingten Leichtigkeit.
