In the 2019/20 season, Mezzo Soprano Annika Schlicht will make her role debuts as Fenena (NABUCCO), Mary (FLYING DUTCHMAN) and Fricka (RHEINGOLD) in the new RING CYCLE directed by Stefan Herheim at the Deutsche Oper Berlin.

After her successful appearance as Auntie in PETER GRIMES at the Bergen International Festival in 2017, Annika returns to the Bergen National Opera in 2019/2020 for her debut as Sesto in LA CLEMENZA DI TITO.

Future concerts include Gustav Mahler’s “Das Lied von der Erde” in Klagenfurt, Felix Mendelssohn-Bartholdy’s “1. Walpurgisnacht” in the Elbphilharmonie with Kent Nagano, the “Glagolitic Requiem” by Kuljerić with the Munich Radio Orchestra under the baton of Ivan Repušić in Munich and Zagreb, a Verdi Requiem in Essen, as well as Beethoven’s 9th Symphony in Berlin, Brussels and Antwerp with Donald Runnicles and Stéphane Denève.

The German Mezzo was born in Stuttgart and studied at the Hochschule für Musik “Hanns Eisler” in Berlin with professor Renate Faltin.

In 2015/16, Annika Schlicht joined the Deutsche Oper Berlin as a member of the ensemble. Since then, she has performed numerous roles including Prince Orlovsky (DIE FLEDERMAUS), the Mezzo Soprano soloist in a staged version of Verdi’s MESSA DA REQUIEM, as well as Wagner’s Wesendonck songs, Hansel (HANSEL AND GRETEL), Olga (EUGENE ONEGIN), Dorabella (COSI FAN TUTTE), Marchesa Melibea (VIAGGIO A REIMS), Maddalena (RIGOLETTO), Auntie (PETER GRIMES), Siegrune (WALKÜRE) and Flosshilde in DAS RHEINGOLD and GÖTTERDÄMMERUNG.

In 2017/18, she sang the roles of Marthe and Bellangère in the very successful world premier of Aribert Reimann’s opera L’INVISIBLE at Deutsche Oper Berlin and in 2019, debuted the role of Adriano in RIENZI which excited audiences and earned many accolades from critics.

Annika’s most recent guest engagements have taken her to the Hamburg State Opera, the Bavarian State Opera, the Opèra de Paris, the Semperoper Dresden and the Berlin State Opera.

While still a student, Annika was engaged on a scholarship from the Liz Mohn Foundation for Culture and Music at the International Opera Studio of the Staatsoper Unter den Linden in Berlin and debuted in the seasons 2013/14 and 2014/15 in various comprimario roles.

Master classes with Julia Varady and Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau, Deborah Polaski, Patricia McCaffrey and Brigitte Fassbaender, who is still a mentor of the singer, have had a deep effect upon the young artist. She is the recipient of the Richard Wagner Association scholarship and has won prizes at numerous competitions.

In 2014, Annika joined the Salzburg Festivals Young Singers Project and made her Festival Debut as Angelina in a children’s version of Rossini’s LA CENERENTOLA and in the world premier of Marc-André Dalbavie’s CHARLOTTE SALOMON. That same summer,  she was invited by the eminent Brigitte Fassbaender to present the Lieder matinee at the “Eppaner Liedsommer” featuring works by Richard Strauss.

Annika Schlicht’s extensive operatic work is supplemented regularly by her appearances in concerts and as a Lieder singer. Giovanni Battista Pergolesi’s STABAT MATER, Johann Sebastian Bach’s CHRISTMAS ORATORIO, Richard Wagner’s WESENDONCK LIEDER, Antonio Vivaldi’s GLORIA, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart’s REQUIEM and Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy’s  SAINT PAUL and ELIJAH are just a few highlights from her repertoire to date.

She has worked with such celebrated conductors as Daniel Barenboim, Zubin Mehta, Donald Runnicles, Alondra de la Parra, Enrique Mazzola, Asher Fisch, Stéphane Denève , Kent Nagano, Edward Gardner, Ingo Metzmacher, Christopher Moulds, Stefan Soltesz, Sebastian Weigle, alongside directors including Harry Kupfer, Hans Neuenfels, Luc Bondy, Claus Guth, Dmitri Tcherniakov and Johannes Erath, and with orchestras such as the Staatskapelle Berlin, Radio Symphony Orchestra Berlin and Deutsches Symphonie-Orchester Berlin, with the Wiener Symphoniker, the Staatskapelle Dresden, the Munich Radio Orchestra and the Ensemble Modern.

She sang Wagner´s Wesendonck Lieder with the orchestra of the Deutsche Oper Berlin under the baton of Donald Runnicles at the Ravello Festival in the summer of 2018.

To mark the centenary of the end of the First World War, Annika Schlicht has been engaged by the UNESCO World Orchestra for Peace as a soloist in Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony.

Julie-Marie Sundal

The Norwegian mezzo-soprano began singing at the early age of five. After studying at the Toneheim College of Music in Hammer and at the Stavanger Conservatoire, she completed her training in the USA, where she was awarded several diplomas as a singer and actress.

In the 2009/2010 season, Julie-Marie Sundal was a member of the International Opera Studio at the theatre in Lübeck, where she sang roles like Erda in DAS RHEINGOLD and SIEGFRIED, Schwertleite in DIE WALKÜRE and Flosshilde in GÖTTERDÄMMERUNG – the latter production was awarded the ECHO Klassik Prize as Best Opera DVD in 2011/2012.

A member of the ensemble at the State Theatre of Lower Saxony in Hanover since the 2011/2012 season, she has sung in Wagner’s RING Cycle (director: Barry Kosky) and in Puccini’s IL TRITTICO (director: Sebastian Baumgarten). Other roles include Hansel in HANSEL AND GRETEL, Mistress Quickly in FALSTAFF, Dryad in ARIADNE AUF NAXOS, Flora in LA TRAVIATA, Olga in EUGENE ONEGIN, Ulrica in UN BALLO IN MASCHERA, Mary in THE FLYING DUTCHMAN, Prince Orlofskiy in DIE FLEDERMAUS and Baroness Grünwiesel in Hans Werner Henze´s DER JUNGE LORD.

Guest engagements have taken Julie-Marie Sundal to the theatre Koblenz and to the Opera House in Daegu (Korea) as Mary in THE FLYING DUTCHMAN, to the theatre Bremen as Sonjetka in LADY MACBETH OF MZENSK and to the Aalto Theater in Essen, to the Staatstheater Nürnberg and to the theatre Lübeck for RING cycles.

In addition to her opera work, Julie-Marie Sundal has enjoyed success on the concert stage. Lieder recitals have seen the young singer perform in Japan, Germany, the USA and her Norwegian homeland. She has sung in Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony in Hong Kong, Handel’s Messiah in Norway, and Mahler’s Second Symphony and Stravinsky’s Les with the State Orchestra of Hanover. In November 2013 she sang a recital of Wagner’sWesendonck Lieder in Hanover.

Elena Zhidkova

Vita

Mezzo soprano Elena Zhidkova made her professional debut at the Deutsche Oper Berlin. She appeared at the Bayreuth Festival. Claudio Abbado invited her for the concert version of Parsifal, for Schumann’s Faustszenen and for his farewell concert at the Berlin Philharmonic where she appeared again in Händel’s Jephta under the baton of Nikolaus Harnoncourt.

At the Teatro Real in Madrid she debuted as Waltraute (Götterdämmerung) and as Brangäne in Tristan und Isolde. A highly sought after guest performer in Tokyo as well she could be heard at the New National Theatre Tokyo among others as Octavian (Rosenkavalier), Fricka (Ring des Nibelungen) and Brangäne (Tristan und Isolde). She debuted very successfully as Judith in Bartok’s Duke Bluebeard’s Castle at the Teatro alla Scala, a role she has also created at the Barbican Hall London with the London Symphony Orchestra under Valéry Gergiev (published on CD). 

Her interpretation of Judith (Duke Bluebeard’s Castle) at the Mariinsky Theatre gained her the „Golden Mask“ award as best singing actress in Russia. She was invited to sing the same part under Seiji Ozawas at the Saito Kinen Festival (also published on CD). Her appearance as Fricka (Ring des Nibelungen) could be witnessed at the Deutsche Oper Berlin and in the new production of the tetralogy at the Grand Théâtre de Genève.

She could be seen as Venus in Tannhäuser at the Semperoper Dresden and sang Marie (Wozzeck) with the BBC Orchestra under Donald Runnicles. As Kundry (Parsifal) she appeared in Lyon, Mannheim and Düsseldorf. Successful performances include furthermore La Principessa di Bouillon (Adriana Lecouvreur), The Foreign Princess (Rusalka) and Eboli (Don Carlo) at the Wiener Staatsoper, Charlotte (Werther) under Michel Plasson, as well as her debut as Ortrud (Lohengrin).

She enjoyed great success as Didon in Berlioz’ Les Troyens and as Amneris in Aida at the Hamburgische Staatsoper and as Santuzza in Cavalleria Rusticana at the Deutsche Oper Berlin and the Opéra Bastille Paris.

Thomas Michael Allen

On the concert stage as well as in opera Thomas Michael Allen has established a reputation for his exceptional vocalism and his vivid portrayals of wide range of lyric tenor roles. His repertoire includes operas by Monteverdi and haute contre roles of the French baroque, as well as leading roles in the operas of Mozart and recent works of composers such as Hans Werner Henze and Philip Glass.

Thomas Michael Allen was born in Chicago and began his musical studies as a pianist. After earning a degree in English Literature at Davidson College he received a Master’s Degree in voice from the Manhattan School of Music in New York.

He has worked with such conductors as William Christie, René Jacobs, Marc Minkowski, Simone Young, Julia Jones, Gary Bertini, Helmut Rilling and Kurt Masur, singing with the Chicago Symphony, New York Philharamonic, Les Musiciens du Louvre, the Academy for Ancient Music, the Akademie für Alte Musik Berlin and the Gewandhausorchester Leipzig. He has a wide and varied concert repertoire and is recognized as one of the most sought-after Evangelists in the Passions of Bach.

Thomas Michael Allen has sung at the Théatre des Champs-Élyées in Paris, Zurich Opera, Staatsoper Berlin, La Monnaie in Brussels, Grand Théatre de Genève, Opéra de Lyon, Opéra de Monte Carlo, de Nederlandse Opera and the Stuttgart Opera working with many prominent directors including Robert Carsen, David McVicar, Laurent Pelly, Nigel Lowrey, Dieter Dorn, Pierre Audi, Graham Vick and Barrie Kosky.

He can be heard on numerous CD recordings, most recently on Purcell Divine Hymns, again with William Christie and Les Arts Florissants (EMI-Virgin Classics), and his first solo CD Mendelssohn Bartholdy: Songs with and without words. Recent releases include the title roles in both Josef Myslivecek’s Medonte (Harmonia Mundi) and Monsigny’s Le Roi et le Fermier (Naxos) His second solo CD, Far Away (Capriccio), with pianist Charles Spencer will be released in March 2014.

After his first engagement at the Staatstheater Braunschweig (2006 to 2009) he moved to the Deutsche Oper Berlin as a member of the permanent ensemble in 2009. He is singing, amongst many other lyric roles, Tamino (DIE ZAUBERFLÖTE), Merkur (DIE LIEBE DER DANAE), Chevalier (DIALOGUES DES CARMÉLITES), Cassio (OTELLO), Macduff (MACBETH), Ismaele (NABUCCO), Walther (TANNHÄUSER), Prince (L’AMOUR DES TROIS ORANGES), Bob Boles (PETER GRIMES), Herodes (SALOME), Don Ottavio (DON GIOVANNI), Pelleas (PELLEAS ET MELISANDE), Hexe (HÄNSEL UND GRETEL), Erik (DER FLIEGENDE HOLLÄNDER) und David (DIE MEISTERSINGER VON NÜRNBERG).

Besides his work as an ensemble member in Berlin, he is also a regular guest in other opera houses. He created the leading part of Melchior Gabor in Benoît Mernier’s Frühlings Erwachen at Théâtre Royal de la Monnaie (awarded a Diapason d’or), in 2007, a role he later sang at Strasbourg’s Opéra national du Rhin in 2008. With mixed solo programmes he made his Japan debut in Tokyo in 2011 and in Madrid, at Théâtre du Châtelet Paris in 2012. His second solo album “Dreams and Nightmares” (with pianist Liebrecht Vanbeckevoort) features songs by Schubert, Wolf, Strauss, Wagner and Liszt and was released in late 2014.

He also works as a librettist (mainly for children’s opera’s) and composer.

Martin Homrich’s first engagement at the age of 23 took him to the Hamburgischen Staatsoper, where he was an ensemble member for four years before moving in 2001 to the Semperper in Dresden. During that time he sang the great Mozart roles such as Tamino, Tito, Don Ottavio, Belmonte and Ferrando as well as Flamand in Richard Strauss’s CAPRICCIO, Tom Rakewell in Stravinsky’s THE RAKE’S PROGRESS, Macduff in Verdi’s MACBETH, Hans in Smetana’s THE BARTERED BRIDE and Max in Weber’s DER FREISCHÜTZ.

As a freelance singer he has made guest appearances at such venues as the Staatsoper Unter den Linden in Berlin, the Deutsche Oper Berlin, the Semperoper in Dresden, at the Aalto Theater in Essen, the Hamburgischen Staatsoper, the Landestheater Innsbruck, the Staatstheater Kassel, the Kölner Oper, Teatro alla Scala, the Kolobov Novaya Opera Theatre of Moscow, the Bayerischen Staatsoper in Munich, the Opéra National de Paris, the Opéra de Rennes, the Prague National Opera House, the Teatro dell’Opera di Roma, the Wiener Staatsoper, the Hessisches Staatstheater in Wiesbaden and the opera houses in Wuppertal and Zurich.
 Additionally, he has appeared at the Schwetzingen Festival, the Schleswig-Holstein Music Festival, the Schloss Ludwigsburg Festival and the Richard Strauss Festival.

After his studies in Vienna, the Croatian tenor won first prize at the 1999 Ferruccio Tagliavini Competition in Deutschlandsberg, Austria.

Tomislav Mužek was engaged at the Bremen opera house in 2000 (where he sang Don Ottavio, Alfredo, Ferrando, Tamino and Rodolfo) and remained a member of the ensemble till 2002.

Since then, the tenor has been a welcome guest at all the great opera houses, appearing at the Bayerische Staatsoper in Munich, the Staatsoper in Berlin, the Hamburgische Staatsoper, the Semperoper in Dresden, the Volksoper in Vienna, Teatro alla Scala in Milan, the Opera House in Daegu (Korea), the Teatro Communale in Florence, Croatian National Theatre in Zagreb, the Théâtre du Capitole in Toulouse and the Opéra National in Paris to sing parts such as Don Ottavio (DON GIOVANNI), Tamino (DIE ZAUBERFLÖTE), Ferrando (COSI FAN TUTTE), Rodolfo (LA BOHEME), Alfredo (LA TRAVIATA), Don Carlos (DON CARLOS) and Nemorino (L’ELISIR D’AMORE).

In recent years, he has played roles such as Steersman and Erik (THE FLYING DUTCHMAN) at the Bayreuth Festival. Tomislav Mužek made a guest appearance with the Berlin Philharmonic under Bernhard Haitink performing the Missa Solemnis both at the Berlin Philharmonie and at the Salzburg Easter Festival. In 2015, he gave an acclaimed debut as Lohengrin at the Theatro Municipal de São Paulo.

Since the autumn of 2014 the singer has forged close links with the Semperoper in Dresden, where he has portrayed roles such as Tamino (DIE ZAUBERFLÖTE), Rudolfo (LA BOHÈME), Max (DER FREISCHÜTZ), Lenski (EUGEN ONEGIN), Erik (DER FLIEGENDE HOLLÄNDER), Florestan (FIDELIO) and as The King’s Son in the new production of DIE KÖNIGSKINDER.

Further engagements include Erik in a new production of Richard Wagner´s THE FLYING DUTCHMAN at the Volksoper in Vienna, Tamino in Mozart´s THE MAGIC FLUTE and as solist in Verdi´s REQUIEM at the Croatian National Theatre in Zagreb. Furthermore he will sing Florestan (FIDELIO) and Erik (THE FLYING DUTCHMAN) at the Semperoper in Dresden.

Felipe Rojas Velozo, a Chilean tenor with a distinguished international career, started his cello studies at the conservatoire of La Universidad de Chile. He also began his vocal instruction there. He made his operatic debut in Santiago, during the 1995-96 season, as Ismaele in NABUCCO. Subsequent engagements in his native city included Alfredo in LA TRAVIATA and the tenor soloist in Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony.

Felipe Rojas Velozo was a member of the permanent ensemble at the Nationaltheater Mannheim, at the Deutsche Oper Berlin, Staatstheater Wiesbaden and at the Oper Bonn. He has guested at many opera houses including San Francisco Opera, Opéra national du Rhin, Hungarian State Opera, Teatro dell’Opera di Roma, Teatre Principal de Palma, Teatro Giuseppe Verdi in Trieste, Semperoper Dresden, Staatsoper Stuttgart, Oper Leipzig, Staatsoper Unter den Linden in Berlin, Deutsche Oper am Rhein in Dusseldorf, Aalto Theater in Essen, Staatstheater am Gärtnerplatz in Munich, Staatstheater Darmstadt and Staatstheater Mainz, Wuppertaler Bühnen, at the Theatre in Aachen and Magdeburg and to the Savonlinna Opera Festival.

Stefan Vinke, after studying church music, education and singing at the College of Music in Cologne, first worked in Karlsruhe and then in Mönchengladbach, before taking up an engagement as “Young Heroic Tenor” at the Nationaltheater in Mannheim from 1999 to 2005. It was there that he was able to acquire a wide-ranging repertoire in a very short space of time and he sang to great acclaim the important roles in the fach, such as Florestan (FIDELIO), Tristan (TRISTAN AND ISOLDE), Siegmund (THE VALKYRIE), Erik (THE FLYING DUTCHMAN), and the title roles in PARSIFAL, LOHENGRIN and IDOMENEO, as well as Don José (CARMEN).

In 2000 the international opera magazine Opernwelt voted him “Male Newcomer Singer of the Year”.

Further engagements followed at the opera houses in Barcelona, Berlin, Chicago, Geneva, Hamburg, Hong Kong, Cologne, Leipzig, Lisbon, London, Melbourne, Munich, Paris, Seattle, Stuttgart, Sydney, Venice and at the Salzburg and Bayreuth festivals.

Jonathan Winell

Vita

Jonathan Winell is a graduate of the Hartt School of Music and was Artist in Residence at the Academy of Vocal Arts. He took Second Prize at the 2015 Leyla Gencer Voice Competition in Istanbul.

Jonathan Winell debuted early in 2012 as Baroncelli in Wagner’s RIENZI in the Lincoln Center with the Opera Orchestra of New York under the musical direction of Eve Queler.

After spells as a member of the International Opera Studio at Berlin’s Staatsoper Unter den Linden and as a member of the ensemble at Theater Regensburg, Jonathan Winell has been a member of the ensemble at Theater Magdeburg since the 2016/2017 season.

John Carpenter

John Carpenter studied singing at Pennsylvania State University, graduating in May 2014. His teachers included Mitchell Cirker, Eric Malson, Kathy Olsen, Graham Sanders and Henri Venanzi. He gained early experience in a production of DER ROSENKAVALIER at the Cincinnati Opera. For the 2014/15 to 2015/2016 seasons, John Carpenter was a member of the Opera Studio of the Bayerischen Staatsoper in Munich, where he played Oscar Wisting in the premiere of SOUTH POLE at the side of Thomas Hampson and Rolando Villazón under the direction of Kirill Petrenko; his roles also included Sid (ALBERT HERRING), Raimbaud (LE COMTE ORY), Journalist (LULU), Wig-Maker (ARIADNE AUF NAXOS), Court Usher (RIGOLETTO) and Imperial Commissioner (MADAMA BUTTERFLY). In the season 2016/2017 John Carpenter was an ensemble member of the Deutsche Oper in Berlin, where he sang roles as Ping (TURANDOT), Moralès (CARMEN), Wagner (FAUST) and Marullo (RIGOLETTO).

He was making guest appearances at the Théâtre des Champs-Élysées in Paris, at the Staatstheater Darmstadt and at the Nationaltheater and the Cuvilliés Theater in Munich.

Thomas Lehman

Known for his “pleasant, well rounded voice” (Palm Beach Arts), baritone Thomas Lehman is a versatile artist whose repertoire ranges from Bach to Berio.

Thomas Lehman has been a member of the ensemble of the Deutsche Oper Berlin since the 2014-15 season. He is to be seen and heard there in such parts as the title role in THE BARBER OF SEVILLE, Belcore in L’ELISIR D’AMORE, Dancairo in CARMEN, Valentin in FAUST, Count Almaviva in THE MARRIAGE OF FIGARO, Pantalon in THE LOVE OF THREE ORANGES, Herald in LOHENGRIN, Dr. Falke in DIE FLEDERMAUS, Schaunard in LA BOHÈME, Mathisen in LE PROPHÈTE and Guglielmo in COSÌ FAN TUTTE. Early in 2017, Thomas Lehman made his debut as Silvio in PAGLIACCI at the Teatro Nacional de São Carlos (Lisbon). He appeared with the orchestra of the Deutsche Oper Berlin under Donald Runnicles at the 2018 Ravello Summer Festival in a programme including Wagner’s “O du mein holder Abendstern” from TANNHÄUSER.

He will be on stage in the 2018-19 season as Marchese d’Obigny in LA TRAVIATA, Dr. Falke in DIE FLEDERMAUS, Maggiordomo / Dumas in ANDREA CHÉNIER, Harasta in THE CUNNING LITTLE VIXEN, as Dancaire in CARMEN, Marullo in RIGOLETTO, Crébillon in LA RONDINE and Horatio in HAMLET. He will also make a guest appearance as Hindley Earnshaw in WUTHERING HEIGHTS at the Opéra national de Lorraine in Nancy.           

Formerly a Young Artist at the Florida Grand Opera, Lehman appeared as Peter Niles in MOURNING BECOMES ELECTRA, Ben in THE TELEPHONE, and as King Tashi/Narrator in an outreach production of David Chesky’s THE MICE WARHe made his operatic professional debut in 2010 as Guglielmo in COSÌ FAN TUTTE with the Delaware Valley Opera and has also appeared as a Studio Artist with the Chautauqua Opera. In the summer of 2014, he was selected to participate in the Ravinia Festival’s Steans Music Institute, where he worked with Dame Kiri Te Kawawa, Kevin Murphy, Patricia McCaffrey, Stephen King, Jennifer Ringo, Cori Ellison, and more. White at Ravinia, he performed Mahler’s Rückert-Lieder in recital and in a review, was deemed “already on his way professionally, showing tremendous concentration and control” (,Chicago Sun Times).

In 2014, Lehman was selected as one of 4 recipients of The Opera Foundation Scholarship. With this, he was granted a year of work and study at the Deutsche Oper Berlin. In addition, Lehman won first place and the Lynne Clarke Vocal Prize at the 2010 Friends of Eastman Opera Competition, first place in the Jessie Kneisel Lieder Competition, an encouragement award at the 2013 MONC Great Lakes Auditions, the Grand Prize at the Orpheus Competition in Nashville, TN, and placed at the 2013 Rochester Oratorio Society Classical Idol Competition.

In concert, Lehman has performed solo in works by Bach, Britten, Dvořák, Orff, Beethoven, Schubert, Handel, Haydn, and Schumann, as well as the requiems of Duruflé, Mozart, and Brahms. Equally comfortable with contemporary music, Lehman performed the works of Pulitzer prize nominated Ricardo Zohn-Muldoon at the Festival Internacional Cervantino, as well as the songs of Takemitsu prize winner Arlene Sierra. Lehman holds degrees from Ithaca College and Eastman School of Music, where he played leading roles in over 12 productions.

Thomas J. Mayer

German baritone Thomas Johannes Mayer first studied history, German language and literature, music education and philosophy, before beginning his vocal training at the College of Music in Cologne with Liselotte Hammes and Kurt Moll.

Following on from initial engagements in Regensburg and Darmstadt, Thomas J. Mayer enjoyed acclaim at the municipal theatre in Basel in the title role of Mozart’s opera DON GIOVANNI and as Achilles in Othmar Schoeck’s PENTHESILEA (director: Hans Neuenfels). Thomas J. Mayer was also greatly praised when he played Wotan/Wanderer in Wagner’s THE RING OF THE NIBELUNG at the Badisches Staatstheater in Karlsruhe and the title role in Hindemith’s MATHIS DER MALER. In the 2008/09 season he moved to the Hamburgischen Staatsoper, where he played a number of roles including the four villains (LES CONTES D’HOFFMANN), Mandryka (ARABELLA), Kaspar (DER FREISCHÜTZ), Jochanaan (SALOME), Wotan (DIE WALKÜRE), Rigoletto and Scarpia (TOSCA).

Thomas J. Mayer has been a freelance artist since 2010.

His international career began in the 2007/08 season, playing the title role in Berg’s WOZZECK (directed by Jürgen Flimm) at La Scala in Milan, where he was susequently engaged as Posa for the new production of DON CARLOS in December 2008/09.

Since then, Thomas Johannes Mayer has guested at many opera houses including De Nederlands Opera in Amsterdam, the Theater Basel, the Théâtre Royal de la Monnaie in Brussels, the Royal Opera House Covent Gaden, the Deutsche Oper Berlin, the Staatsoper Unter den Linden and Komische Oper in Berlin, the Deutsche Oper am Rhein in Dusseldorf, the Aalto Theater Essen, the Hamburgischen Staatsoper, the opera houses in Cologne and Leipzig, Teatro alla Scala in Milan, the Bayerischen Staatsoper in Munich, the Opéra National de Paris, the New National Theatre Tokyo, Palau de les Arts Reina Sofia in Valencia, Theater an der Wien, the Opernhaus in Zurich and at the Bregenz Music Festival, the Herodus Atticus festival in Athens, the Bayreuth Festival (2012, 2013, 2016, 2017, 2018), the Salzburg Festival (2010 and 2011), the Boston Symphony Orchestra and the Odense Symfoniorkester.

His repertoire encompasses both the great Strauss and Wagner roles such as Barak (DIE FRAU OHNE SCHATTEN), Jochanaan (SALOME), Mandryka (ARABELLA), Amfortas (PARSIFAL), Telramund (LOHENGRIN), Wotan/Wanderer (THE RING OF THE NIBELUNG), Dutchman (THE FLYING DUTCHMAN) as well as roles such as Moses in Schoenberg’s MOSES AND AARON, Thoas in Gluck’s opera IPHIGENIA IN TAURIS and Mizguir in Rimsky-Korsakov’s THE SNOW MAIDEN.

Future engagements include as Graf Andrae Vitelozzo Tamare in Franz Schreker´s DIE GEZEICHNETEN at the Opernhaus in Zurich, Telramund in Wagner´s LOHENGRIN at the National Theatre in Prag, Wassermann in Dvorák´s RUSALKA at the Opéra national de Paris, the title role in Manfred Trojahn´s OREST and Don Pizarro (FIDELIO) at the Wiener Staatsoper.

Uwe Schenker-Primus was born in Rosenheim, Bavaria in 1974 and completed his vocal studies in Würzburg in 2006. He then acquired a grant from the Wagner Society and won prizes in several competitions.

His concert and oratorio repertoire ranges from Monteverdi and Bach through Mendelssohn and Orff to contemporary music and includes several premieres. In the field of Lieder his speciality is performing the works of Erich Wolfgang Korngold and Hans Pfitzner; since 2011 he has been recording Korngoldʼs entire works with the pianist Klaus Simon for the Naxos label.

From 2005 to 2009 Uwe Schenker-Primus was a permanent ensemble member of the Mainfrankentheater in Würzburg, where he took roles such as Valentin (FAUST), Guglielmo (COSÌ FAN TUTTE), Peter Besenbinder (HANSEL AND GRETEL), Wolfram (TANNHÄUSER) and Papageno (THE MAGIC FLUTE). Since the 2009/2010 season he has been a permanent ensemble member with the Deutsches Nationaltheater in Weimar where his roles have included the Count in DER WILDSCHÜTZ and THE MARRIAGE OF FIGARO, the title role in DON GIOVANNI, Speaker (THE MAGIC FLUTE), Onegin (EUGENE ONEGIN), Danilo (THE MERRY WIDOW), Valentin (FAUST), Germont (LA TRAVIATA), Falke (DIE FLEDERMAUS), Pangloss (CANDIDE), Peter Besenbinder (HANSEL AND GRETEL), Sharpless (MADAMA BUTTERFLY), Marcello (LA BOHÈME), Faninal (DER ROSENKAVALIER), Le Bailli (WERTHER), Kingʼs Herald (LOHENGRIN) and the title role in Verdiʼs FALSTAFF.

To date, the baritone has accepted invitations to guest at the Deutsche Oper in Berlin (Le Bailli), at the Komische Oper Berlin (Falke), the Musikalische Komödie in Leipzig (Tsar), the State Theatre in Darmstadt (Danilo) and several times at the Stadttheater in Bremerhaven and the Mainfrankentheater in Würzburg (Danilo, Kurwenal in TRISTAN UND ISOLDE, Falke in DIE FLEDERMAUS). In the summer of 2014 Uwe Schenker-Primus was Tevye the Milkman in ANATEVKA at the Eutin Music Festival. In 2015 und 2016 he took the role of the Old Robber Woman in THE SNOW QUEEN at Esterházy Castle, and gave his acclaimed role debut as Dulcamara at the Oper im Steinbruch (St. Margarethen, Austria) in L´ELISIR D´AMORE. He assumes the roles of Papageno, Sprecher, 2. Priester and 2. Geharnischter in Mozart´s THE MAGIC FLUTE at the Oper im Steinbruch 2019.

Vita

He has appeared as a soloist in Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony and in operas by Humperdinck, Rossini, Verdi and Puccini in his native city. He has sung the part of Dandini in Rossini’s LA CENERENTOLA in Munich and Ingolstadt and Yevgeny Onegin in Tchaikovsky’s eponymous opera at the Prinzregententheater in Munich.

Antonio Yang has developed an extensive repertoire that concentrates on the Italian fach. He has sung roles in Mozart’s DON GIOVANNI and Count Almaviva in LE NOZZE DI FIGARO as well as parts in operas by Donizetti, Verdi and Puccini.

He has won prizes at competitions, including 3rd prize at the International Renata Tebaldi Singing Competition in Italy, 1st prize and the Audience Prize at the 2006 ARD International Music Competition in Munich, and 1st prize at the 2007 Emmerich Smola Prize for New Talent organised by SWR.

Antonio Yang first joined the ensemble of Theater Lübeck (2008-2013), moving from there to the ensemble of the Nürnberg Staatstheater (2013-2018), where he could be seen and heard in roles such as Rigoletto (RIGOLETTO), Carlo Gérard (ANDREA CHÉNIER), Alberich (DAS RHEINGOLD & GÖTTERDÄMMERUNG), Wotan (DAS RHEINGOLD and DIE WALKÜRE) and Wanderer (SIEGFRIED), Mandryka (ARABELLA), Fritz/Frank (DIE TOTE STADT), Macbeth (MACBETH), Orest (ELEKTRA), Herr von Faninal (DER ROSENKAVALIER), Jokanaan (SALOME), Renato (UN BALLO IN MASCHERA), Méphistophélès (LA DAMNATION DE FAUST), Giorgio Germont (LA TRAVIATA) and Zurga (THE PEARL FISHERS). With effect from the 2018/2019 season, Antonio Yang performs as a freelance artist.
