Martina Welschenbach was born in Stuttgart and received her musical training at the College of Music in Stuttgart and at the Guildhall School of Music, as well as completing the Opera Course at the Royal College of Music in London.

She became a member of the Opernhaus in Zurich where she made her debut in various roles: as Gretel in HANSEL AND GRETEL, Ramiro in LA FINTA GIARDINIERA and Feodor in BORIS GODUNOV. She also sang parts like Tebaldo in DON CARLO, Paggio in RIGOLETTO, the Fisherwoman in PETER GRIMES, Curra in LA FORZA DEL DESTINO, Annina and Flora in LA TRAVIATA, 2nd lady in THE MAGIC FLUTE, the innkeeper’s daughter in KÖNIGSKINDER, Zulma in L´ITALIANA IN ALGIERI, Samaritana in FRANCESCA DA RIMINI and Anna in INTERMEZZO.

After changing to the soprano fach, Martina Welschenbach was an ensemble member at the Deutsche Oper in Berlin from 2008 to 2014. She has sung Musetta in LA BOHÈME, Gretel in HANSEL AND GRETEL, Oscar in UN BALLO IN MASCHERA, Aennchen in THE MARKSMAN, Echo in ARIADNE ON NAXOS and Clorinda in LA CENERENTOLA, Susanna in THE MARRIAGE OF FIGARO, Zerlina in DON GIOVANNI, Micaëla in CARMEN, Paminain THE MAGIC FLUTE, Woglinde in DAS RHEINGOLD and GÖTTERDÄMMERUNG, Karolka in JENUFA, Solveig in PEER GYNT, Liu in TURANDOT, the title role in Janáček’s THE CUNNING LITTLE VIXEN and played Eva in DIE MEISTERSINGER VON NÜRNBERG.

As of the 2014/2015 season she is still involved with the company via a residency contract and is portrays roles like Liu (TURANDOT), Fiordiligi (COSI FAN TUTTE), Irene (RIENZI), Mimi (LA BOHÈME), Europa (THE LOVE OF DANAE), Senta (THE FLYING DUTCHMAN) or Helmwiege (THE VALKYRIE).

She has made and make guest appearances at the Opéra national de Paris ( Regina / MATHIS DER MALER), with the ORF Radio-Symphonieorchestra in Vienna (as Thekla in Wallenstein´s JAROMIR WEINBERGER), with Debussys “La Damoiselle élue” under the baton of Maestro Donald Runnicles and the Berliner Philharmonikern, as Lulu at the Wuppertaler Bühnen, as Senta (DER FLIEGENDE HOLLÄNDER) at the Daegu International Opera and as Senta at the Opéra de Rennes and Angers Nantes Opéra.

Martina Welschenbach has worked with such famous opera directors as Claus Michael Gruber, Jens-Daniel Herzog, Martin Kuschej, Carlo Lievi, Christof Loy, Giancarlo del Monaco and David Pountney, and with conductors like Christoph Eschenbach, Vladimir Fedoseyev, Nikolaus Harnoncourt, Cornelius Meister, Ingo Metzmacher, Carlo Rizzi, Donald Runnicles, Nello Santi, Peter Schneider and Franz Welser-Möst.
